Choosing Solar Cleaning Route Software: What to Check Before You Switch
There is no shortage of scheduling software. Most of it was built for plumbers, electricians or general contractors, and it shows. A solar cleaning company needs something that understands recurring cleanings, panel counts, roof pitch and routes made of many short stops. Before you switch, it is worth knowing exactly what to look for.
Know Where You Are Starting
If you are still on paper and spreadsheets, the move itself is covered in Moving Solar Cleaning Scheduling Off Paper, Whiteboards and Spreadsheets. This guide is about choosing the tool. Write down what bothers you most about how you schedule now. Those are the problems the new software has to solve first.
1. Does It Know When Customers Are Due?
Recurring cleanings are the core of the business. Check that the software can put customers on plans by days between visits, such as twice a year, yearly or quarterly, and bring them due on their own without anyone setting reminders. Then check how it shows due work. A plain list of names is not enough. You want a map of what came due, with overdue customers clearly marked, so you can build routes from clusters.
In SolarCleaningBossPro, that is the Waiting List: a live map and list, pins colored not due yet, due now and overdue past a 7-day grace.
2. Does It Know What a Solar Job Is?
Generic field-service software gives a job an address and a notes box. A solar cleaning job is a panel count, a mount, a number of stories, a pitch, extras like bird proofing and critter guards, and access notes about the spigot, roof access side, gate code and dog. If those details are not built in, they end up in free-text notes nobody reads.
Check that the details show on the lists where you build routes, not just on the job page, so you can size a day by the real work. The reasons are covered in How Many Roofs a Day? Sizing a Solar Cleaning Route by Panel Count and Pitch.
3. Can It Route by Truck?
Look for a dispatch board by day that filters by truck, with one-click ordering from the shop and the ability to set the order by hand. Closest First and Furthest First cover most days, and hand changes cover the rest. Check that the order on the board is exactly the order the tech sees.
4. What Does the Tech Get?
The crew will use the tech app more than anyone uses the office side. Check that it runs on the phones your techs already have without a special device, shows their stops in route order with navigation, panel details and access notes, and has simple Start, Skip and Complete buttons. Before-and-after photos, a time clock and payment at completion save real time. Crew GPS on the office map saves calls.
5. What Does the Customer Get?
Automatic on-the-way and arrived texts, night-before reminders customers can choose, and two-way texting with the office are close to essential for a route business. A customer app with a live route map, invoices and online payment goes further. Check how texting is counted on each plan.
Also check billing. A route business gets paid best when completing the job creates the invoice and can charge a card on file on the spot. If you clean commercial sites for owners with many buildings, look for monthly account billing that puts every site on one statement.
6. What Does It Really Cost?
Look at the full price, not the starting one. Some tools charge extra for routing, the tech app, texting or each user. SolarCleaningBossPro plans are Start at $59/month, Pro at $89/month and Crew at $199/month, with routing, the tech app and the customer app on every plan. Each plan includes a monthly text allowance of 500, 1,000 or 2,000 segments sent and received. Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial and no credit card.
Try It on a Real Week
The best test of any route software is a real week. Import your customer list by CSV, add panel details for the customers due soon, and build next week's routes from the map. If it is faster than your current method by the end of the week, you have your answer. Many owners also start with the live demo to see the Waiting List and dispatch board before signing up.
