Training a New Solar Cleaning Tech on the App in One Ride-Along
Teaching someone to clean solar panels safely takes time. Teaching them the app should not. If the app takes a week of training, it is the wrong app. With SolarCleaningBossPro, most new techs learn everything they need on the phone during a single ride-along with an experienced tech or the owner. Here is a plan for that day.
Know What the Office Will See
Before you train, it helps to know why each tap matters. What the Office Sees When a Solar Cleaning Tech Completes a Job covers what happens on the office side when a tech finishes a stop. Explaining that to a new tech, briefly, makes the taps make sense. Complete is not busywork. It sends the invoice and charges the card.
Before the Ride-Along
In the office, set up the new tech's employee record with their name, a personal PIN and the truck they will ride on. Make sure the day's jobs for that truck are on the dispatch board in route order. Pick a day with a good mix of stops if you can: a couple of single-story homes, a two-story, and a ground mount or carport.
At the Shop: Fifteen Minutes
- Open the link on the new tech's own phone, iPhone or Android, in the browser.
- Install it to the home screen so it opens with one tap from now on.
- Sign in with the company login and their personal PIN. Tell them to keep the PIN private.
- Clock in with the time clock.
- Look at the day's list. Point out that it is in route order and the top card is the first stop.
First Stop: The Experienced Tech Drives the Phone
On the first stop, the experienced tech runs the app while the new tech watches, talking through each step out loud:
- Tap the navigation button for directions.
- On arrival, read the card: panel count, mount, stories, pitch, extras.
- Read the access notes: spigot, roof access side, gate code, dog.
- Tap Start. Take the before photos.
- Clean. Take the after photos from the same angles.
- Check that any extras on the card were done. Tap Complete.
Second and Third Stops: Swap
From the second stop on, the new tech holds the phone and does every tap while the experienced tech watches. Let them make small mistakes, like forgetting before photos, and point them out kindly. By the third or fourth stop, most new techs are running the phone without help.
Try to include at least one stop with a different mount. A ground mount or carport shows the new tech that the card changes with the job, and that the mount, stories and pitch are there to help them plan the setup before they unload anything. Ask them to read the card out loud and tell you which ladder or pole they would bring. That small exercise teaches more than any explanation.
Use these stops to teach the habits that matter most:
- Read the next card before leaving. Know which ladder you need next.
- Count panels against the card. If the numbers do not match, look for another array before leaving. The full idea is in Using the Panel Count as the Solar Cleaning Tech's Checklist.
- Tap Complete at the job. Not at the end of the day.
Teach Skip on Purpose
New techs are often afraid to skip. They think it looks bad. Make a point of explaining Skip during the ride-along, even if nothing gets skipped that day. Explain the reasons: wind, heat, rain, no access, no safe roof access. Show them where to write the note and what a good note looks like. Tell them clearly that a skip with a good reason is always better than a risky climb.
Teach Notes
Have the new tech write at least one note during the day. A ladder spot, a spigot location, birds under an array, anything. Show them that the note shows up in the office. Notes are how a new tech starts adding value beyond the cleaning itself.
Back at the Shop
Clock out together. Then take a few minutes to look at the office side of the day: the jobs marked complete, the photos the new tech took, the invoices created. Seeing their own work land in the office makes the whole system click.
For the next few days, have the new tech run a short route alone and check their photos and notes each evening. After that, they are on their own. For the full set of things the app does, visit the SolarCleaningBossPro solar cleaning app page.
