Offering a Solar Cleaning Plan at the First Job
There is one moment in a solar cleaning customer's life when a plan is easiest to sell: the minute the first cleaning is finished. The ladder is coming down, the panels are clean, and the customer is looking at the difference. If nobody asks then, the next chance might be a year away, if it comes at all.
Why the First Job Is the Moment
Turning One-Time Solar Panel Cleanings Into Recurring Plans covered every chance you get to convert a one-time customer. This article focuses on the strongest one.
At the end of the first job, everything is working for you. The customer just watched the crew work safely and carefully. The before-and-after photos are on the tech's phone. The work is fresh. And there is no new sales effort needed: you are already there, already trusted, already paid or about to be.
Compare that to calling the same person eight months later. They may not remember your company name. They may have a mailer from someone else on the fridge.
Who Makes the Offer
In an owner-operator business, it is you. In a company with crews, it should be whoever finishes the job, usually the lead tech. That means every tech needs to know the offer by heart and feel comfortable saying it.
You do not need a salesperson. You need one or two sentences said the same way every time, and a habit of saying them.
What to Say
Keep it short and practical. Lead with what the customer gets, not what the plan is called:
- “Most folks around here have us back every six months, after the spring pollen and again later in the year. We text you the night before and just charge the card on file. Want me to put you on that?”
- “If twice a year sounds like a lot, we can do once a year instead. Same deal, you never have to call.”
Then stop talking. If they say yes, great. If they say they will think about it, tell them the office will follow up with a text.
Show the Photos
Before-and-after photos are the strongest sales tool a solar cleaner has. Hold the phone out and show the dirty panel next to the clean one. Point out the bird droppings that are gone or the film that came off the bottom edge. If the customer uses a production app for their system, suggest they compare it before and after in general terms. You do not need to promise numbers; the photos make the point.
The photos stay with the job in SolarCleaningBossPro, so the office has them on hand when it follows up with a customer who wants to think it over.
Recording the Answer
Whatever the customer says, write it down on the job before leaving the driveway. A note like “Said yes to twice a year” or “Interested, wants a text next week” tells the office exactly what to do.
When it is a yes, the office sets the minimum days between visits on the job, 180 for twice a year or 365 for yearly, and adds the tag. From then on the cleaning comes due on the Waiting List automatically. The panel details from this first visit carry over to every future one.
When it is a maybe, a friendly text from the office a few days later closes plenty of them.
Make It Easy to Say Yes
A plan offer works best when there is nothing to fill out on the spot. If the customer signed up through your website form with a card captured, or the tech is charging a card on file at completion, the plan needs no extra paperwork. The customer can update their card or see invoices in the customer app anytime.
It also helps if the price is clear. Many operators quote the plan price on the original estimate so the tech is not inventing numbers in the driveway. Pricing approaches are in Pricing Plan Visits vs One-Time Solar Panel Cleanings.
A quick role-play during a morning meeting helps new techs. Have one person play the homeowner and the other make the offer, then swap. It feels silly for about a minute, and then the words come out naturally in the driveway, which is the whole point.
Build the Habit
The difference between companies with a strong plan base and companies without one is rarely the plan itself. It is whether anyone asks. Make the offer part of every first cleaning, check job notes each week to see whether techs are making it, and follow up on every maybe. For how plans run once the customer says yes, see the recurring solar cleaning software page.
Make Every First Job the Start of a Plan
SolarCleaningBossPro keeps the photos, the notes and the plan on the job, so a yes in the driveway becomes a cleaning that comes back on its own.
