Ground Mounts and Carports on the Solar Cleaning Route: Easy Stops That Round Out a Day

Not every solar cleaning job involves a ladder and a pitched roof. Ground-mounted arrays in back yards and on rural properties, and carports over driveways and parking lots, are some of the most useful stops on a route. They are often quicker to set up, safer to work, and flexible about when they get done. Used well, they make every other part of the schedule easier.

Different From Roof Work

Commercial sites, covered in Scheduling Commercial Solar Array Cleanings Around Business Hours and Site Rules, are often planned around timing. Ground mounts and carports are the opposite: most of them can be done almost any time of day, which is exactly what makes them valuable on a route.

Knowing Which Jobs Are Ground Level

Every job in SolarCleaningBossPro records the mount: roof, ground mount or carport. It shows under the address on the Waiting List and the dispatch board, along with the panel count and any extras, for example “20 panels · Ground mount” or “48 panels · Carport.” That makes ground-level work easy to spot whenever you are building a route or looking for a filler.

Carports can still be high, so note anything unusual in the access notes: “Carport is tall, use the extension pole from the truck” or “Cars must be moved, contact the office manager.”

Afternoon Work

Many operators prefer to do steep and tall roofs early while panels are cool, which leaves the afternoon for easier work. Ground mounts and carports are the natural fit. The crew stays off pitched roofs in the hottest part of the day and still finishes the route.

When building the route, run the auto-route Closest First or Furthest First from the shop, then move ground-level stops toward the end of the order by hand. The reasoning behind early roofs is covered in Starting Early: Building Solar Cleaning Routes Around Cool Morning Panels.

Weather Backups

On a windy day, roofs may be off the table while ground mounts are still workable. Long poles and ladders do not like wind, but a ground-level array is a different story. If you keep a handful of due ground mounts and carports on the Waiting List, they become the backup plan when the forecast turns.

Open the map, find due ground-level jobs near the truck's area, and swap them in for the roofs. Text the roof customers about their new day from the office, and the night-before reminders follow the job.

Gap Fillers

A short gap in the afternoon, because a stop cancelled or the morning roofs went quickly, is easy to fill with a ground mount nearby. The office sees the truck on the crew GPS map, finds a due ground-level job close by, and adds it to the end of the route. The tech sees it appear with its panel details and access notes and taps navigation.

Because ground-level work usually needs less setup, it fits the odd hour that a roof job would not.

The same goes for the end of a route that finished early. Rather than driving back to the shop with an hour of daylight left, the crew can take one more ground mount on the way home. Over a season, those extra stops add up to a lot of cleanings that would otherwise have waited for another day.

Carports at Businesses

Carports over parking lots at offices, churches and shops are a special case. The panels are easy to reach, but the cars underneath are not yours. Schedule them for when the lot is empty, such as early mornings, evenings or weekends, and put that in the access notes so the stop is never booked at the wrong time.

Rural and Larger Ground Arrays

Ground mounts on rural properties can be large, and they come with their own access notes: which gate to use, where to park off the field, whether livestock might be around, where the nearest water is. Some may need the truck to bring its own water if there is no spigot near the array. Put all of that on the address so it shows every visit.

Big rural arrays can take a good part of a day and are often far from town. Group them by area and plan them as anchor stops for a day out that way, filling the rest with nearby homes.

Pricing and Plans

Ground mounts and carports can be priced from your service list the same way as roofs, by panel with a minimum charge, but without the story and steep-pitch add-ons. They can sit on the same recurring plans as roof customers, coming due by their minimum days between visits.
